#UCSF #UCSFLife #biomedicalscience #re搜索30 years ago today, we lost four beloved members of our UCSF family during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake when their vanpool tumbled off the Nimitz Freeway in 奥克兰.
.
This cypress tree was planted on the Parnassus Campus to commemorate Delores Ardoin Stewart, Donna Marsden, Lanna Lee, and Rae Beauregard-Sund as well as vanpool member Martha Joy Edstrom, a former UCSF employee who was a horticulturalist in Golden Gate Park at the time of her death. The tree still stands today, providing shade over a special plaque dedicated to their memory.

From Adrian: Happy #UCSFSOTU day! Today we took the time to reflect on the last five years and to envision what tomorrow holds for UCSF. 校长 Sam Hawgood offered an optimistic and inspiring vision for the future, and we couldn’t be more proud to head there with the community that this event represents and inspires every year - our #UCSFfamily.

#ucsf #ucsfproud #ucsfsotu #meded #highered #ucsflife“Beauty and color – and weaving in all those colors – is medicine for us,” says Karen Lopez-Acero, master’s student and president of the UCSF Associated Students of the School of Nursing, about @UCSFnurse's new mural that honors the pioneers who paved the way for diversity and inclusion in nursing.
. “It teaches us to love each other, how to respect each other, how to honor the different ways we come to the table with different things, so we can care for each other. That’s what this is for me, and I know I will be walking along these halls reminded of that.”
.
The idea for the mural originated with our 护理学院 students, who advocated for more contemporary and diverse images of the nursing community.
.
The mural was created by Bay Area artists Shanna Strauss and Jessica Sabogal.

People who breathe in this fungus can develop a range of illnesses - from pneumonia to meningitis – but it’s unclear why some people get sick and others don’t.
.
The fungus’ secret may lie in its shape-shifting abilities inside the human body. Inside human lungs, the fungal spores develop into a parasitic form and continue to grow and replicate, sometimes spreading infection to other parts of the body.
.
“When they're in the environment of the human body, these fungi really alter their growth program dramatically,” said UCSF microbiologist Anita Sil. “They become attuned to manipulating the human immune response and are really very good at surviving long-term in the human body.”
.
Click the link in our bio to see how UCSF researchers take extreme protective measures to study the fungus – because simply inhaling it can make healthy people sick.

@ucsfdentistry @ucsfnurse @ucsfgraddiv @ucsfmed“My previous exposure to college was literally just Hollywood movies, which is not a really good representation of what you should be doing in college,” said UCSF dentistry student Jerry Liu (@dr.dentistDDS), who grew up in a Chinese immigrant community in California. His parents valued education and expected him to attend college, but as a first-gen, he didn’t understand how college could lead to a professional career.
.
Looking back, he sees how he often diminished his own accomplishments. “I would tell my younger self that the things you are doing in life, even though you feel like you’re making mistakes, you’re the first one to do it, so don’t focus too much on the mistakes. Be more forgiving of yourself.”
.
He chose dentistry partly because it would allow him to practice anywhere and see other parts of the country – the East Coast, Alaska, or parts of rural America – and perhaps serve as a first-gen ambassador in a community where college rates are low. “Every time I try something, I think, how do I pass on the lessons I’ve learned from this experience?”
.
Join us in recognizing UCSF’s first-gen students whose grit and resilience will pave the way for others in the community. .
